What is Chiropractic Care? In Plain English

Chiropractic is aimed at looking after your spine and nervous system so that you feel, move and function at your best.

Chiropractic is a safe, non-invasive, drug-free, evidence-based primary healthcare service that provides natural and effective management of your nervous system and musculoskeletal conditions. It focuses on the body’s relationship between the brain and the body that encompasses the structure (spine) and function (nervous system) and how that relationship affects your health.

It is about understanding the nervous system has a vital role in regulating all functions of the body, every single movement you make, and coordinating millions of messages to and from your brain and body. Everyday life can cause stress to your nervous system and spine that in turn interferes with that brain-body communication and your overall well-being.

Chiropractic is the science of locating the areas of spine & nervous system interference and chiropractic adjustments, gently applied to correct these areas, return the balance to your spine and nervous system.

Why Do You Need Chiropractic?

Stress.

To say that the modern life is filled with stresses would not be an understatement. There are various forms of stress that affects your mind and body. Accumulation of stress can put your body out of balance. It slowly grinds, or simply whacks, you into a state of disharmony. Here are some common stresses that can affect you every day.

Everyday stresses can overwhelm your nerve system and spine which can lead to dysfunction of how your nervous system and body is working. This neurobiomechanical dysfunction is called Vertebral Subluxation.

Vertebral Subluxation (Chiropractic or Vertebral Subluxation) is a neurobiomechanical dysfunction of the spine and often may present as pain, swelling, altered blood flow, muscle tension, reduced spinal movement and resultant nerve dysfunction. Uncorrected subluxation can lead to subtle dysfunction, dis-ease and breakdown/disease over time.

One of the key focus of chiropractic care is to detect and correct vertebral subluxation, in order to restore the healthy function of the spine and nervous system.

Vertebral subluxation robs individuals of their full potential, limiting their ability to live a vibrant and healthy life. Chiropractic care seeks to remove this interference and unlock the body's innate potential for optimal health"

Frequently Asked Questions

Chiropractors are spinal health experts that work to restore body and spinal biomechanics and nervous system function.  Beginning with taking a detailed patient case history provides the chiropractor background about your particular needs, health, such as surgeries, accidents, onset of your condition and other details relating to your current health.  After discussion your specific problem and reviewing your case history, a comprehensive examination is performed that includes a spinal, orthopaedic and neurological examination.  Further tests such as x-rays may be required to provide further information on structural and functioning problems associated with your condition.  The examination assists in identifying the areas of dysfunction and potential areas of nervous system interference.  A report of findings is discussed with the patient and a plan of chiropractic care may be recommended.

The New Zealand Government’s Inquiry describes Chiropactic care as remarkably safe. Chiropractic has an excellent safety record and is a non-invasive, natural, conservative treatment service.  In relation to the treatment of neck and back, studies have shown that a course of chiropractic care was 250 times safer than a course of anti-inflammatory drugs.  Whilst chiropractic has an excellent safety record, no form of treatment modality is entirely free of potential adverse effects.

A chiropractic adjustment is precise skilled force applied in a particular direction to a spinal segment joint.  This safe and natural approach improves spinal function, movement, nervous system function and health.

There are many techniques to deliver an adjustment.  Commonly the chiropractor uses their hands however there are other techniques that use spring loaded or electrical mechanical devices.  Some adjusting methods are quick, whereas others may require a slow, constant pressure.

Chiropractic adjustments usually don’t hurt and are not painful.  The vast majority of our patients enjoy being adjusted and love the way their body feels more relaxed and has less tension after the adjustment.

The “crack” or “pop” sound people hear and feel with a chiropractic adjustment is the release of gas from the joint.  That noise is heard with manual techniques.

Absolutely, yes!  There are many different adjusting techniques our chiropractors at Connect Chiropractic use for treatment.  We have many patients that do not like the “cracking” noise and prefer not to be adjusted that way.  Before any treatment begins, how the adjustments are performed is explained and preferences are discussed and agreed upon by the patient and chiropractor.

Chiropractors are primary health care practitioners registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and you do not need a referral to see a chiropractor.

GP’s are increasingly referring patients to chiropractors via the Medicare Enhance Primary Care (EPC) program that allows those eligible up to 5 visits a year.

Most people feel great after an adjustment.  They feel more relaxed, have less stress and tension in their body and generally feel lighter and freer in movement.  Many of our patients report they also have more energy and sleep better as well.  Sometimes however, some people may feel slight soreness particularly after their first chiropractic adjustment.  Typically this is very mild soreness like someone may feel after having a deep tissue massage or after starting a new exercise and usually lasts a short time (24 – 48 hours).

Yes! At Connect Chiropractic we treat a vast range of people of all ages and stages of life.  The techniques we use are modified appropriately for the patient and age that range from very gentle, light fingertip pressure to robust full hands-on manual techniques.

Pain is a sign that something isn’t right.  Pain is the way your body messages that a limit has been reached or a problem has developed.  Whilst our body adapts, minor aches and pains are often shrugged off and the pain may go away for a period of time, however if the underlying problem remains unattended, the pain can return and potentially worsen until it becomes more difficult and possibly take longer to resolve.

An Australian chiropractor will have completed five years of university training of an approved and accredited degree course.  The five years may consist of a five year Bachelor of Chiropractic, or it may consist of a three year Bachelor degree followed by a two-year post graduate Masters or Bachelor degree.
