Are Your Hobbies Having a Negative Impact On Your Body

Written by Dr Nicole Hudson, Principal Chiropractor at Connect Chiropractic, Noble Park. Dr Hudson holds a BHSci(Chiro), MClinChiro, GradDip MedSc, and BSc, with over two decades of clinical experience helping patients recover from activity-related injuries and stay active doing the things they love.

Hobbies are wonderful activities that bring balance, joy, and purpose to our busy lives. Whether it’s gardening, golf, hiking, painting, cycling, dancing, knitting, or spending weekends playing sport or online gaming with friends, the things we love to do outside of work help reduce stress, improve mental wellbeing, and give us a sense of connection and fulfilment.

Hobbies uplift the soul. Sometimes, they can also place unexpected strain on the body, or we may already be experiencing pain or discomfort from a problem that is stopping us from the hobbies we love.

Many hobbies and leisure activities involve repetitive movements, awkward postures, prolonged sitting, or physical exertion that can gradually lead to tension, stiffness, or discomfort. Gardeners may experience lower back strain from bending and lifting. Golfers often notice tightness through the shoulders, hips, or spine after repetitive swinging. Crafters and artists can develop neck and wrist tension from long periods of focused work, while runners and cyclists commonly experience tight hips, knee discomfort, or postural fatigue.

Often, these aches and pains develop slowly over time or quickly from an intense session that overloads your body. Because hobbies are enjoyable, many people push through discomfort without realising their body is compensating or has become overloaded. Eventually, pain, reduced mobility, or ongoing stiffness can start interfering with the very activities that once helped us feel at our best.

This is where chiropractic care can play an important role in helping you get back to doing what you love to do.

At Connect Chiropractic, our care focuses on supporting the health and function of your entire body, your spine, joints, muscles, and nervous system that helps your body move more efficiently and comfortably and addresses any problems you may be experiencing. By improving movement, reducing stress and tension, and addressing areas of pain, restriction or imbalance, our chiropractic care helps you get back to the things you love to do and helps you continue doing the activities you love with greater enjoyment, ease and confidence.

Chiropractic care can help:

  • Improve flexibility and joint mobility
  • Reduce muscle tension and stiffness
  • Support recovery after intense physical activity
  • Improve posture, reflex times, balance and movement patterns
  • Help manage recurring aches and pains
  • Support overall wellbeing and body awareness

Importantly, chiropractic care is not only for athletes or people in pain. Many people who see us use chiropractic as part of their proactive health routine that helps maintain movement, prevent minor issues from becoming larger problems, and supports a more active lifestyle.

Your hobbies contribute enormously to your emotional wellbeing, social connection, and overall quality of life. Looking after your body means you can continue doing the things that energise you, inspire you, and bring you happiness for years to come.

After all, movement is more than physical — it’s deeply connected to how we experience life.
